The American Gambling Association, a top land casino lobby group, is calling for a government funded and backed study into online slot sites, online craps, and other online gambling venues in order to assess the true impact of the anti online casino law. The AGA has been known to take a very neutral stance towards the anti online gambling law that has been floating around Congress over the past few months. This week, however, the AGA seemed to have made a sudden turn in their attitude towards the law and has called upon Congress to back a study into online gambling. The Association called for a committee to be formed which would study online gambling from close up for a year-long period.
The change in attitude seems to mean that the AGA is taking a more realistic and rational approach to the anti online gambling law. The AGA has said that the study will reveal the true nature of online gambling, something that is not really known. The study will hopefully explain the social impacts of online gambling, whether the ban would be able to control the industry or whether a regulated online gambling industry would be more effective in keeping out elements such as organized crime, minors and addictive gamblers. The study will also examine the possibility to ban curtain games such as online slot, online poker, or should the ban be unanimous.
The AGA’s announcement was accepted favorably by the online gambling industry. Online gambling companies on the London Stock Exchange reported an increase in shares and analysts of the market believe that the request for this inquiry is one further hurdle for Congress to implement the ban.
