Online Gambling Law Makes US the Laughing Stock of the World

10 Sep 2006

The online gambling law, set to come before the US House of Senates, is turning the country into a laughing stock with the rest of the world. Everyone is amazed how the US can put online casino gambling ahead of more pressing world issues.

As if the United States’ image abroad was not low enough, now it has given the rest of the world a reason to laugh out loud. It seems that America’s obsession with online gambling has made the country an object of ridicule by the rest of the world, who cannot, for the life of them, understand why the US Senate is so insistent on discussing the online gambling ‘problem’ while there are so many more pressing global problems to be dealt with. They cannot begin to fathom how online gambling can be compared to issues that threaten the very existence of mankind.

With Bin Laden still at large, the Middle East walking a tightrope of disaster, the Iraq War long since declared a second Vietnam and Iran poo-poohing the rest of the world by dangling its A-bomb plans like a red cloth, it might do the US Senate good to throw the online gambling discussion out the window and deal with the more serious issues. While this should be reason enough to drop the gambling subject, it is important to remember that polls indicate repeatedly that the majority of Americans are AGAINST the ban on online gambling. Common sense also shows that a country simply cannot ban a multi-billion dollar industry. The best it can do is regulate it and reap the rewards with gambling taxes and secure wagering environments for its citizens.

It’s hard to understand why the United States is going all out in its war against online gambling. With over 80 countries in the world in the process of regulating and legalizing online gambling, it’s also hard not to laugh at the US’s stubbornness and tendency to move backwards on this issue.
